Wichita, KS— Friends University is proud to announce the ribbon cutting of the Center for Enterprise and Community Engagement (CECE). The ceremony will begin at 3 p.m. in the Olive White Garvey Business and Technology Building on the Wichita campus.

In August 2024, during the annual Breakfast with the President event, Dr. Amy Bragg Carey, the university’s president, announced the unveiling of the Center for Enterprise and Community Engagement (CECE). In addition, she shared the exciting news of a generous $1 million donation that would fund the center’s development and operations.

Since then, Rachel Steiner has led the center, where students have provided resources, project assistance and business support to the non-profit and business community around Wichita. In the past academic year, students that opted in have attended the Wichita Business Journal Talent Summit, announced connections with the Ronald McDonald House Charities in Wichita, met with IMA Financial Group, Inc. leadership, and much more.

“We are very grateful for the amazing gift that started our dynamic center for our students and community. Propelled by one of our Friends University core values of service, I look forward to seeing more of the students engaging with the business and non-profit communities, in what we expect will be transformational learning experiences,” said Dr. Carey.

Wichita, KS— Friends University is thrilled to announce a partnership with Kansas Health Science University (KHSU) to offer classes for the Master of Health Care Leadership degree program (MHCL). This degree combines health care-specific business courses with leadership development, preparing students to become administrative leaders in the health care system.

Under this partnership, Friends University will act as the home institution, where students will be fully matriculated and from which will earn their degree. Students will take courses from KHSU, and those credits will be transferred back to Friends University.

The courses taken at KHSU are Health System Sciences I, II, III, and IV, and will be transferred as credits toward the Friends University courses Strategic Planning and Performance Analytics in Healthcare, Contemporary Issues in Aging Services, and Managing Complex Healthcare Systems.

The coursework was developed by leaders in the health care industry and specifically designed to encompass all phases of health care leadership, including acute and long-term care, clinic and hospital management, and home health and hospice agencies.

“Our partnership with Kansas Health Science University–Kansas College of Osteopathic Medicine is a game‑changer. It’s not often you see a graduate business program that prepares leaders across acute and long‑term care, clinic and home‑health settings and also puts them in state‑of‑the‑art medical school classrooms, learning side‑by‑side with future doctors,” said Dr. Jim Long, the Friends University Division Chair of Business and Finance. “Sharing that patient‑focused, innovative environment gives our students a firsthand appreciation of the clinical perspective and inspires them to build more compassionate, sustainable health care organizations.”

Wichita, KS Levi Convirs of Friends University has been named the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Pearson-Swenson Sports Information Director (SID) of the Year, an honor voted on by his peers, the conference office announced Friday.

The name of the KCAC Sports Information Director of the Year award was changed to the Pearson-Swenson Sports Information Director (SID) of the Year award in Spring 2024 to honor two long-time and award-winning SIDs in the conference’s history: A. John Pearson and Carol R. Swenson.

“The SID position is so strong in the KCAC that anyone in the league could win this award and deserve it, I’m just blessed my number came up this year,” Convirs said. “I work for the best university and athletic director in the country. Dr. Rob Ramseyer has an innate ability to foster a system that gets the best out of everyone, me included. I’m also grateful for the support President Dr. Amy Bragg Carey consistently shows myself and our athletic department.”

“SID life can be a challenge, I wouldn’t have lasted in this business without the support and encouragement of a strong family, from my mom and dad to my wife Michelle and three sons (Matthew, Luke & Peyton),” Convirs continued. “I also want to thank my graduation assistant Melissa Juhnke for all her support, she’s been so loyal to me over the last five seasons that I feel like part of this award is hers. I’m blessed to work at a Christ-centered institution, and I never take for granted the opportunity I’ve been given to tell the story of Friends University athletics every day.”

Nominated by a fellow Sports Information Director in the conference, Convirs’ dedication to Friends University Athletics and expanding the amount of content related to the Falcons were highlighted. The following is an example of what Convirs does/has done to promote Friends Athletics and the KCAC as a whole:

  • Working with local and state news outlets to highlight the Falcons.
  • Facilitating podcasts with Friends head coaches.
  • Elevating the amount of social media content and the quality of said content.
  • Working with SIDEARM (the website provider for Friends University Athletics) to come up with new and engaging ways to promote the Falcons.
  • Working at many KCAC championship events.

“This award is well deserved,” Dr. Rob Ramseyer, Vice President of Athletics and Strategic Expansion at Friends University, remarked. “Levi is a great person who is always willing to serve and works incredibly hard. He is dependable, mission-aligned, and humble, and I am grateful to be working with him at Friends.”

“Levi has most certainly earned this honor,” Mark Hoffhines, KCAC Assistant Commissioner for Sports Information and Communications, said of Convirs. “He does whatever it takes to highlight Friends student-athletes, and has expanded his reach into long-form storytelling this year. Levi is also one of the first to offer up his services at KCAC championship events, and is willing to serve in any role that is needed. He truly wants to provide a quality game experience for KCAC student-athletes, coaches, and fans. His hard work and dedication is an example to others in the KCAC.”

About A. John Pearson

Mr. Pearson was hired at Bethany College to first work as the Director of Public Relations and Alumni Affairs, under the Dr. Arvin W. Hahn presidency during a very challenging and, yet, a very rewarding era in college history. He continued in that position until 1992 when he became the Director of the Archives and Heritage Center and of Sports Information until 2004, when he retired. He served as the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) statistician, and was inducted into the Bethany Athletics Hall of Honor in 2004 and received the 2007 Clarence “Ike” Pearson Award from the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Sports Information Directors Association. In 2011, he was honored by receiving the Lifetime Achievement Award from the College Sports Information Directors Association. Pearson also served as NAIA Great Plains, later Region IV, Information Director. Sadly, Pearson passed away in 2023.

About Carol R. Swenson

Mr. Swenson served as sports information director at McPherson College from 2000 to 2009, following a 30-year career in the McPherson school district. When an individual thinks of track and field in the state of Kansas, Swenson is one of the most notable names to come up. A virtual encyclopedia of cross country and track and field, Swenson as served as public address announcer at the KSHSAA Track and Field Championships since 1974, the Big 12 Outdoor Track Championships three times and the Indoor Championships once, and serves as PA Announcer at the KCAC Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He also served several times as the USA Track and Field Press Officer for USA National Teams at a myriad of competitions worldwide.

The Educating Character Initiative (ECI), a part of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University, has awarded Friends University with $50,000 to help educate and embed character in their distinctive contexts of higher education.

“We were overwhelmed by the quality of the proposals we received this year,” said Jennifer Rothschild, Director of the Educating Character Initiative. “It is exciting to see so many institutions developing character projects rooted in their own identities and missions. We have so much to learn from these projects.”

The mission of the Program for Leadership and Character at Wake Forest University is to inspire, educate and empower leaders of character to serve humanity. Through innovative teaching, creative programming and cutting-edge research, the program aims to transform the lives of students, foster an inclusive culture of leadership and character, and catalyze a broader public conversation that places character at the center of leadership.

In recent years, many colleges and universities have reached out to solicit advice and share ideas about how to educate character. Inspired by the University’s motto of Pro Humanitate (for humanity) and supported through a generous grant from Lilly Endowment Inc., Wake Forest developed the Educating Character Initiative to support a wider community of individuals and institutions to educate character within higher education. Through the creation of a network of interested institutions and educators, the development and dissemination of research and resources, the organization of conferences and convenings, and the direct awarding of grants to individuals and institutions interested in advancing this work, the Program for Leadership and Character aspires to nurture a creative, compassionate and collaborative community of educators who can learn from each other as partners in character education. Wichita, KS— Friends University has launched Spanish language pages on friends.edu to assist the growing population of Hispanic prospective students and their families, as well as connect current students to resources offered in their heritage or native language.

The initiative will help the university continue its mission of increasing access to education, while also aiding in its goal to achieve status as a Hispanic Serving Institution. As of Fall 2024, Friends University was serving 21.6% undergraduate Hispanic or Latino students, surging the need for more translated services and aid.

Helmed by Vice President of Enrollment Management and Student Success Dr Preston Todd, Title III Project Coordinator Alexis Evans, Director of Hispanic Serving Initiative Bellaly Escalante, and Web Developer Mickey Shannon, the project assists with strengthening services and expanding educational opportunities for current and prospective Hispanic students.

“I am very excited for the launch of the Spanish pages,” said Escalante, “It was also great for us to have partnered with local business AB&C Bilingual Resources for our translations. Having these pages available will make exploring our website more inclusive for students with Spanish speaking families and native Spanish speakers will be able to navigate our website with more ease.”

The Spanish pages are available at https://www.friends.edu/es

Wichita, KS – Friends University Fine Arts Department is proud to present an Opera Workshop Showcase Tuesday, April 29th at 7:30 p.m. in Sebits Auditorium located in the Riney Fine Arts Center on the Friends University campus at 2100 W. University Ave., Wichita, Kan.

Students from the Opera Workshop class will perform scenes from L’elisir d’amore, Don Giovanni, Die Zauberflöte, Doña Francisquita, Orphée aux enfers, Der Zigeunerbaron, and Ruddigore. Featuring braggadocious generals, damsels with no distress in sight, lovebirds united at last, and lost-but-found treasure, these scenes are sure to keep you entertained!

The production will be complete with costumes, set pieces, and brilliantly designed projected backdrops provided by students from the Graphic Design area. Their backdrops amplify not only the scenic design, but the drama unfolding on the stage; whether it’s a character’s move to the dark side, or a meteoric conclusion to the entire evening. The Graphic Design students have also designed and printed a unique program for this performance; gifting patrons with a special keep-sake to take home.

This is a collaborative performance that you won’t want to miss!

The performance is musically and stage directed by Dr. Lydia Bechtel, with collaborative pianist Cindy Blasdel, and the creative direction of graphic design professor Steve Monsen. This event is free and open to all.

Wichita, KS— Friends University is proud to announce the grand opening of its newly renovated and expanded recording studio, made possible through a generous donation from Leon Trammell, a small business owner and author of How Underdogs Win. The ribbon cutting ceremony will take place at 11 a.m. on Monday, April 29, in the Business and Technology Building on the Friends University Wichita campus.

Leon Trammell, founder of Tramco and longtime supporter of Friends University, contributed the funds that transformed the university’s podcast station into a state-of-the-art recording studio. The facility will feature a wrap-around green wall for immersive visual effects, high-definition video and audio equipment and professional-grade editing software—offering students access to industry standard tools to bring their academic and creative projects to life.

“This generous gift from Leon Trammell gives our students an incredible opportunity to learn, create and grow using industry-leading tools,” said Sean Cash, Assistant Chair of the Division of Business and Assistant Professor of Marketing. “Access to this level of technology not only gives our students a competitive edge but also allows us to integrate media production into the curriculum for any major—from marketing and graphic design to education and the fine arts.”

The project was a collaborative effort between Sean Cash and Frank Choriego, Adjunct Professor of Business, both of whom have worked closely with Trammell on previous business projects.

“Leon believes in empowering future small business leaders, and this studio is a reflection of that belief,” Cash said. “Students at Friends University will now have a space to practice storytelling, develop branding and media campaigns, produce interviews and create promotional content—skills that are invaluable in today’s digital economy.”

In How Underdogs Win, Trammell profiles eight businesses—including his own—that defied the odds to achieve success. Each business highlighted in his book was invited to the ribbon cutting and many have indicated their intentions to participate in the ribbon cutting. His donation reflects his ongoing commitment to equipping the next generation with the confidence and mindset needed to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams.

Wichita, KS— Friends University is happy to announce the launch of the Center for Mission-focused Teaching & Learning (CMFTL). This center seeks to cultivate scholarly and pedagogical excellence animated by the university’s Christian mission. Its initiatives will promote excellence in teaching and scholarship, improve the student learning experience and retention, and foster an innovative, Christ-centered educational culture.

Heading the CMFTL is Dr. Lori Kanitz. Dr. Kanitz received her Bachelor of Arts in English Literature at the University of Oklahoma, her Master of Literature and Theology at Durham University in England, and her Doctorate in Literature Theology at the University of St. Andrews in Scotland. She has dozens of publications, keynote presentations, conferences and community services throughout her career, many of them centering on intersections of theology, literature and culture.

The CMFTL will be responsible for academic initiatives that strengthen the university’s Christian mission, such as professional development and mentoring for faculty, promoting student-faculty research and scholarship, and grant writing to expand funding for campus-wide faith and learning opportunities. Creating a center to equip faculty to think missionally about teaching and learning has long been a goal of Friends University as it seeks to graduate students who honor God and serve others by integrating their intellectual, spiritual and professional lives.

“Friends’ faculty are incredibly committed to their students’ success, and they are passionate about their disciplinary subjects,” said Dr. Kanitz. “Having a center able to resource faculty with opportunities to grow professionally, think missionally about teaching, and better serve their students is so exciting. It speaks to Friends University’s vision and commitment to long-term impact. I am incredibly honored to serve the university and my colleagues in this role!”

The center will have its official launch on April 22, 2025, with its first ever Research Symposium, starting at 1:30 p.m. in the Davis Administration Building.
