Spiritual Life Credits

Spiritual Life Credits

Friends University Campus Ministries is committed to the spiritual life, formation, and growth of undergraduate students. All full-time CBASE students participate in the Spiritual Life Credit program to encourage faith formation. Each semester, students will be required to participate in a minimum of eight opportunities designed to help them explore and engage the Christian faith. These opportunities, called Spiritual Life Credits (SLC), will satisfy a graduation requirement.

We look forward to helping students integrate their spiritual, intellectual, and professional lives by cultivating a variety of spaces to thoughtfully explore how Christian faith brings shape and understanding to all academic fields.

Q&A

Who is this program for?

All full-time freshmen, sophomore, and junior students, including transfer students, will be required to earn eight SLCs each semester to graduate from Friends University.

Students enrolled before the fall of 2024 are not required to obtain SLCs.

Are there any exemptions?

Occasionally, students have circumstances that prevent them from completing their Spiritual Life Credits. For certain circumstances, exemptions may be granted. To inquire about a potential exemption, please submit this form. A member of Campus Ministries staff will reach out to you.

How do I track my attendance?

Students attending one of our spiritual life events or services should start by downloading the iAttended App on their smartphone or tablet. Create an account using your firstname_lastname@student.friends.edu email address.

At each opportunity, students will be provided with a QR or text code upon arrival and/or a QR or text code to scan out. Once this has been completed, their attendance at the event will be immediately recorded with their iAttended App on their smartphone. In order to receive credit for attending an event/service, a student must arrive within 5 minutes of the beginning of the event/service and stay for the duration of the event/service.

How many do I have to get?

Students are required to complete eight SLCs each semester that they are a full-time undergraduate student until they reach senior status (88 credit hours). After reaching senior status, students must enroll in SLC 100 to ensure that they have met the graduation requirements.

Students transferring in at senior status are required to complete one semester of SLCs.

Where is the schedule?

Campus Ministries will coordinate the official SLC catalog from which students will choose how to earn their credits. Using your iAttended App, you can see a list of all the upcoming Spiritual Life Credit opportunities. Updates or changes will be announced on social media or in the iAttended app.

I would like to have my event, project, or opportunity count for Spiritual Life Credit. What are my next steps?

We would love to partner with you and have guidelines for SLC opportunities. You can read our policy here. If your event aligns with our guidelines, you can submit it at this link for Campus Ministries staff to consider adding it to the schedule.

What will it look like on my transcript?

In your Falcon Map, you will see SLC 100 as a requirement for your degree plan. Once you reach senior status, you can enroll in SLC 100. If you are in good standing with your SLCs in all semesters, you will meet the graduation requirement.

What happens if I don’t get all of my credits?

There may be an occasion when students arrive at the end of the semester having not completed their spiritual life credits. Students are responsible for communicating with Campus Ministries staff to make a plan to complete the missing credits.

Students who are unable to make up credits may be subject to SLC Probation, which would prevent them from participating in extracurricular activities until they have communicated with Campus Ministries and developed a plan to make up credits.

If a student has not completed any credits by midterms, the Campus Ministries staff will contact the student, and the student’s advisor, any coaches, and/or program directors. If a student does not earn the required eight SLCs before finals week, they will be contacted by the Campus Ministries staff to develop a plan for completion.

Since SLCs are a graduation requirement, Academic Integrity Policies apply to students’ work related to their credits. Students who are found to be cheating, plagiarizing, or aiding others in dishonest practices will be submitted to the Academic Integrity Board. Failure to communicate and work with Campus Ministries will result in SLC Probation and can result in the ineligibility to graduate.

I have other questions.

We would love to answer them. Please send an email to campusministries@friends.edu or stop by Davis 214 to talk with the Campus Ministries staff.
