You’ve explored programs, connected with an advisor, and made the brave decision to return to school—congratulations! As the first day of class approaches, it’s natural to feel a mix of excitement and nerves. Whether it’s been a few years or a few decades since you last sat in a classroom, rest assured: you’re not alone, and you belong here.
Here’s what to expect—and how to prepare—for your first day and week as a Friends University student.
If you’ve already been granted access to your course platform (like Moodle or Canvas), now’s the time to explore it. Look for your syllabus, deadlines, and any early assignments. Set up your student account, log in to your classes, and note important due dates on your calendar. These first steps go a long way in reducing first-week stress.
Your life is full—and adding college to the mix is no small task. Review your weekly schedule and block out dedicated time for classwork and study. Ask your Academic Success Coach or instructor about the expected weekly workload so you can plan realistically. Creating a steady routine early on is key to staying balanced.
Be ready for an information flood. You’ll get course outlines, assignment instructions, platform details, and more—all at once. It’s completely normal to feel a little overwhelmed. In fact, that mental stretch is part of the learning process. Give yourself time to adjust, and remember, you don’t have to master everything overnight.
You might be one of the older students in the room—or you may find classmates of all ages and backgrounds. Either way, your life experience adds richness to class discussions. Your perspective matters and will deepen the learning environment for everyone.
You’ll likely kick off your course with a quick introduction or icebreaker. Don’t be surprised if you’re paired with classmates for group projects or discussions. Many adult students make lasting friendships through these connections. Stay open—you never know who you’ll meet!
Even if you’re used to traditional classrooms, much of today’s college experience happens online. You may submit assignments through an online portal, watch lectures on Zoom, or participate in digital discussion boards. If this is new to you, don’t worry—your instructors and support staff are here to help you navigate it all.
At Friends University, learning is an interactive experience. Don’t hesitate to share your ideas or ask questions. Whether you’re on Zoom or in person, your engagement enriches the classroom and helps you retain what you learn.
Yes, homework starts right away—often by the end of your first class. Expect reading assignments, discussion posts, short reflections, or even projects. It might feel like a big shift at first, but you’ll settle into the rhythm soon.
Starting something new as an adult takes courage. You may feel a little out of your comfort zone at first, and that’s okay. Growth always involves some tension. At Friends University, you’re not just a student—you’re part of a learning community that sees and supports you.
Stay organized, ask questions, and lean into your strengths. With time, the nerves will fade, and confidence will take their place.
